Sermon Title: Jump off the bandwagon Passage: Mark 9:30-41
Discover: Read Mark 9:30-41 together.
Main Points:

1. A cross-centered life goes to the end of the line (Mark 9:33-35)
2. A cross-centered life will help us cast a wide net (Mark 9:38-41)

Jesus continues to tell his disciples what their lives are supposed to look like if they truly believe Jesus, is God. But unfortunately, like most of us today, they still didn’t get it or chose to disregard what Jesus was trying to reveal to them.
Mark continues to highlight the spiritual dullness of the disciples. We must recognize that we can do the same thing. We want to think of ourselves as important; we want to be great and make a difference in this world.
We want to be valuable and have people give us recognition. We think we need to have a say. People should need us because we are important. So Jesus has a message for his disciples and it is an important message for us. To be great, we must be last. To have significance, we must be willing to serve.
We make ourselves servants. We make ourselves servants to all people. The heart of a servant welcomes others without consideration of what we will receive in return. A true servant refuses to show favoritism or prejudice toward others, especially toward those who are weak and vulnerable. Greatness is in serving.

Dig: What is God revealing to you in this particular passage?

• How are you most tempted to compare yourself with others to figure out who is the greatest?
• Jesus uses an example of what it would look like to love and serve by elevating children. In what ways do we think like the world in how we choose our friends, people we choose to be with and help, etc.? What thins can we start doing differently to fight against the pull of our hearts to be around people that will benefit us the most or who are most like us?
• In verse 35 Jesus says, "If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." How does Jesus demonstrate this in his own life? What are some things we can change (attitude, thoughts, behaviors) to emulate the life of Christ?
• When do you find it hardest to serve others and how does this passage motivate you?
• Why is it so important to receive others, even if they aren't part of our 'tribe' or clique? How do we do this in practice?
