As Job continue to struggle and wrestle with God not understanding why he was experiencing such pain and suffering, Job’s friends continue to share their wisdom which unfortunately was false wisdom. Job’s friends think life is simple and black and white and the reason why they give the advice they give to Job. They believed that life is based on cause and effect and why Job was suffering. They had an unbalance view of justice and fairness because if God showed his true justice and fairness many more of us would be suffering and experiencing the consequences of our sins and disobedience.
So now it is Zophar’s turn to share. Zophar is the kind of person and just says whatever is on his mind and heart. He gets straight to the matter with Job assuming he knows God’s heart and intentions for Job. He thinks he has some special knowledge of God and what God is doing what he is doing. Zophar is very direct and cutting in his accusations, perhaps because he has already heard his two friends speak, and he has also heard Job’s bitter comments directed to them and to God. Zophar could be characterized as a man full of worldly wisdom and common sense, but not godly sense. Yes, God’s ways are not our ways, and neither are our thoughts his thoughts. That is why he is God, and we are not. But at the same time, the Scriptures are clear that we can know the heart of God and in fact, if we ask for wisdom, that he would grant it. James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” We should never presume or assume of God and how he may be working in the lives of others. In humility and meekness, we should not lean on our own understanding, but have a reverence and fear for God remembering who he is and his promises to give us a hope and a future. In this, we will be able to remember to show mercy and grace when uncertainties and doubts arise because though people and circumstances change, God never does. Prayer: Father God, your ways and thoughts are higher than our ways and thoughts. Please help us to cultivate a life of godly wisdom, not coming from a place of judgment, but of grace and mercy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
