마태복음 27장 45-56절

After several hours of having to endure verbal abuse, cursing, physical pain, and hanging on the
cross, Jesus cries out in anguish, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This shows the
depth of sorrow, pain, and anguish that Jesus had to endure for us to experience the furor and
wrath of God so that we would never have to. No amount of temporary pains that we could
experience on earth can ever compare to God forsaking us like he did to Jesus. And what makes
this act of Jesus so amazing is that he did it all for us. Jesus was blameless, without sin, and he
chose to bear the sins of all mankind which meant that God would have to abandon him at the
cross.

When Jesus let his spirit go and died seven results were set in motion: Jesus, having cried out
again with a loud voice, yielded up his spirit; and behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in
two, from top to bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks were split; and the tombs were
opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and having come out
of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city, and they appeared to many.

Each result have a spiritual meaning of a new reality because of Jesus’ death that would forever
change the world. The most important change being that we have now been forever reconciled
with God—that we have free access to the God of the universe and that is the good new of
Jesus Christ. The tearing of the curtain that separated the sinful people from the holy presence
of God signifies what happened when the body of Jesus was torn. The tearing of Jesus’s body
secured the reconciliation between God and his sinful people. That is what the tearing of the
curtain signified.

As well, when hen something shakes and breaks apart, it is on its way to collapsing. Its former
use is coming to an end. Something else is going to replace it. In other words, the death of Jesus
means that the things we regard as so firm and sure and unshakeable — the very earth and the
great rocks — even these are not stable. They are not the final reality. They are fragile and
temporary. We have a new reality in Christ that is immovable and cannot be shaken.

​In closing, the power and importance and foundational significance of the voluntary death of
Jesus for us is inexhaustible. Spirit surrendered, curtain split, earth shaken, rocks split, tombs
opened, bodies raised, Jesus raised, city entered, many saints seen by many. The implications of
these results of the voluntary death of Jesus are as real today as ever.

Prayer: Father God, we thank you that you took our place on the cross and died a death that we
deserved. Your death has given us a new reality and new life. May this new reality encourage us
to give our lives to you and to live with confidence to know that the things of Christ is
immovable and unshakeable. Amen!
