Reflection for Exodus 28:1-14 Chapter 28 provides instructions regarding the priestly garments for Aaron and his sons who will serve the people of Israel as priests. We are told that Aaron's sacred garments were to be made of "gold, and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and fine linen.” We find this description five times in our Bible reading and twenty-five times in the book of Exodus telling us something of its importance. Therefore, the specific details about what the priests are to wear is not just about appropriate clothing. There is a message communicated. The garments are a picture of the ideal high priest. Why do we start with the garments and not the actual priests? Because the garments are the picture of the ideal high priests and not the actual person wearing the garments. The ideal high priest will be a man of heaven. So this priest is a man of heaven that walks in all the beauty and glory of God himself. This would be a foreshadowing of what was to come in the person and work of Jesus. Now, do you remember where else we have seen these materials? We have seen them in the description of the tabernacle. When Aaron was walking around he looked like the tabernacle. Aaron's clothes reproduce the tabernacle, as they are made out of the same material and the same colors. So, in a very real way, Aaron is a living, walking tabernacle. In a very real way, Aaron represents the presence of God among His people in the flesh. Not only do we see this, but we also see that the high priest both represents and is responsible for his people. He is a representation of the people of God. He comes into the presence of God with the names of the sons of Israel on his shoulder to atone for their sins. A mediator between God and the people. The good news for us today is that we don’t have to wear this elaborate and elegant garment today. And the reason we don’t have to wear these garments anymore is because Jesus is our high priest. Jesus put on flesh and put the cross on his shoulders as a representative for all those who would believe. Prayer: Father God, thank you for being our perfect and final high priest. That because of your representation, we have free access to God without fear or doubt. Help us to believe that it is indeed finished with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
