The office of eldership is given in Scripture to provide spiritual nurture and protection for the church. Elders are to shepherd the flock of Jesus Christ through the faithful ministry of the Word and are to lead by godly example.
Serving as elders and deacons are one of the most humbling things anyone could ever do. Thankfully, we are not left on our own to figure how to elect and be these things. Elders are to be looking to see what the Lord is doing with his people, and utilizing the opportunities that teach, disciple, and love. And Paul says that this is a noble task. Paul is emphasizing here to not minimize or take the call to eldership lightly. The office of an overseer or an elder is a very important and significant role, not to be taken lightly at all. It is not necessary that the elders have great talents, wealth, worldly position, or high education, but it is indispensably necessary that they be people of God, knowing and living out the gospel as new creatures in Christ Jesus; engaged in the embassy of reconciliation, they must be themselves reconciled. As elders, they must love Christ above all else and the work for the sake of God and his church. In this will the church continue to flourish and shine Christ’s light in the world that is so desperate for the grace of God. Prayer: Father God, thank you for your church and for the godly leaders that you have called and appointed to lead your people. May you continue to strength and protect them. May we continue to serve together to build your church. In Jesus’ name, amen.
